History
JABILUKA
1979
- Jabiluka receives environmental approvals from the Commonwealth Government.
1982
- Final Aboriginal approvals are received.
1983
- Hawke Labor Government implements Labor’s “Three Mines Policy”, effectively halting Jabiluka’s development.
1991
- ERA purchases the Jabiluka orebody from Pancontinental Mining for a cost of $125 million.
1993
- ERA undertakes a feasibility study on the Jabiluka development and significantly changes the design of the project from that of the original plan.
1996
- ERA produces an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) under a new Coalition Government.
- EIS submitted for public review in October 1996.
1997
- ERA submits a supplemental EIS in June 1997.
- In October 1997 the Commonwealth Government announces that the Jabiluka proposal had completed environmental procedures and would be subject to stringent conditions
1998
- ERA begins consultation with the NLC in May 1998, in relation to the change in design of the Jabiluka proposal.
- Final Northern Territory approvals for the development of the mine are received in June 1998. ERA commences stage one of development on 15 June 1998.
- In August 1998, ERA receives additional environmental approval process the ore at Jabiluka (the Jabiluka Mill Alternative).
1999
- Stage one of development is completed on 4 July 1999.
- Following ERA’s completion of stage one development, the 17-hectare development site was placed on standby and environmental care and maintenance to facilitate further community discussion on the project.
2005
- On 25 February 2005, the Jabiluka Long Term Care and Maintenance Agreement was signed, which obliges ERA (and its successors) to secure Mirarr consent prior to any future mining development of uranium deposits at Jabiluka.
