Garrangali wins Album of the Year at NT Music Awards

Garrangali Band tonight won the Album of the Year Award for Garrangali at the Northern Territory Indigenous Music Awards at the Darwin Amphitheatre.

The Album of the Year Award was sponsored by Northern Territory mining company Energy Resources of Australia Ltd (ERA).

ERA Chief Executive, Mr Rob Atkinson, said he was delighted to have an opportunity to help promote Northern Territory's talented performers.

"Music is a big part of community life out in West Arnhem Land, where ERA operates the Ranger mine in Jabiru," Mr Atkinson said.

"Events like this, which showcase the great talent and achievements of Top End musicians and artists are a great inspiration for young people in our local communities."

Mt Atkinson said the music awards continued to go from strength to strength and provided national and international exposure for the Territory's talented musicians, singers and other performers.

Sponsorship of the Northern Territory Indigenous Music Awards Album of the Year is part of ERA's community initiatives, which include support for the Territory Thunder and Storm teams, sponsorship of the George Chaloupka Fellowship, and support for next month's Mahbilil Festival in Jabiru, which celebrates contemporary and traditional Indigenous culture.

The other finalists for the NT Indigenous Music Awards Album of the Year were Waltjim Bat Matilda by Ali Mills, Freedom Road by Brian Murphy and the Band
Nomadics and Looking Out by Warren H. Williams.
