The plant was originally designed to produce 3,000 tonnes of uranium oxide (U3O8) a year, requiring the processing of about one million tonnes of ore per year. Expansion of the plant was completed in 1997 to increase production capacity to about 5,000 tonnes+ of U3O8 per year.
Each operating area contains a control room from which an operator can remotely start and stop all equipment in that area, determine the status of equipment and control all key process variables. All control systems are microprocessor based. One person retains responsibility for all aspects of operation, within each area.
