The Ranger power plant supplies power to the mine and the township of Jabiru. Jabiru was originally constructed as a mining town, but was reclassified from a mining town to an `open’ town by the Administrative Appeals Tribunal in 1997 when considering the diesel fuel rebate issues. The Ranger electricity station has a generating capacity of 28 megawatts, provided by five diesel and one steam turbine-driven alternator sets. The average load on the station is about ten megawatts of electricity. Distillate fuel is used at a rate of 50 to 60 tonnes a day.
