Mr van Tonder joined the ERA Board as a Non-Executive Director in May 2020. Mr van Tonder is a member of the Sustainability Committee and Rehabilitation Committee. Mr van Tonder joined Rio Tinto more than 21 years ago and has held senior operational and project management roles in South Africa , Australia and Mongolia.

Mr van Tonder was appointed by the Oyu Tolgoi Board of Directors as the new Chief Development Officer for Oyu Tolgoi in December 2020. As a member of the executive body for Oyu Tolgoi LLC Mr van Tonder is accountable for the delivery of the US$ 6.925 Billion , six year underground project.
