Energy Resources of Australia Ltd (ERA) is a member of the Rio Tinto Group, and recognises the importance of providing a website that is accessible to everyone and easy to use. On this page we outline our ongoing commitment to making our online services accessible and explain the accessibility features of this site.

Accessibility features on this website

The following features have been introduced to improve navigation for screen reader users, keyboard navigation and users of text-only browsers.

Access keys

The following keyboard shortcuts can be used instead of a mouse for navigation; these allow quick and easy access to key areas of the site. These keys have been chosen to follow the UK government website guidelines where possible.

S - Skip navigation
1 - Home page
2 - Media
3 - Site map
4 - Search
5 - Library
6 - Help
7 - Legal
8 - Site terms and conditions
9 - Contact us
0 - Accessibility

Use of access keys depends on the type of browser being used:

  • Internet Explorer 5 or higher: Hold down the ALT key, press the chosen access key, and then press Enter to activate the link.
  • Internet Explorer 5 or higher for Mac: Hold down the Control key, press the chosen access key, and then press Enter to activate the link.
  • Netscape 6 or higher: Hold down the ALT key, then press the chosen access key.

Increasing the text size

We have used style sheets throughout, and users can increase or decrease the size of the text in two ways:

  • Use the browser 'Text Size' options in the 'View' menu
  • Click the text size control options denoted by different size letter 'As' at the top of each page

Other features

HTML heading tags are used to convey the document layout and make it simpler for screen readers to navigate using a list of headers. Navigation menus are marked up as HTML lists which ensures that the number of links in the list is read out at the start and also that they can be skipped easily.

Our pages are optimised to be viewed at a screen resolution of 1200 x 780 pixels, however the design also accommodates users viewing at 800 x 600 or 1280 x 1024 pixels resolution.

Commitment to accessibility

We acknowledge the importance of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) of 1995, the World Wide Web Consortiums' (W3C) Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) and Section 508 of the U.S.A Federal Electronic Rehabilitation Act all of which state that provision must be made to ensure that all products and services are accessible to disabled users.

At Rio Tinto, we are committed to making our online services inclusive because accessibility has a positive effect on general usability and we believe that websites that are accessible and usable benefit everyone.

We will continue to review, test and modify our website for usability and accessibility issues and aim to ensure maintaining compliance is part of our ongoing commitment.

We aim to achieve and maintain optimum accessibility by regularly carrying out a combination of both expert reviews and 'real' user testing. We believe that automated test tools alone are unable to assess accessibility effectively.

Standards compliance

Our pages conform to a minimum Level 1 (A) compliance as specified by the Web Content Accessibility guidelines. Where possible the majority of Level 2 (AA) and 3 (AAA) requirements are also met.
